The harder you cull the more you specialize and the more specialized you are the less you will be able to adapt to changes in your barn and the show scene. Just having X number PT does not guarantee you money, many lowever PT horse make money just fine.

This mare is an 11.6 she has lost me a good deal

Here is a set of identical clones. One has lost 2k

    one has made 6.5k

They are 8k apart, not a huge difference but they are identical clones it shows you that PT is not a guarantee.

This horse was in the red for most of his life then turned it around only a year or to ago.

Some of the most profitable horses in the game are under 11 and some even under 10. This one happens to be a foundation too.

I know a lot of people are not please with the auto enter right now but it really has provided loyal dependable service for some time. People made 10s of millions on it at first and this has just been the swing back from that. I have my whole stable on auto enter even my 265 surrogate mares with are straight create foundations. They have made me (even with the auto enter having had acted up) 822305 subtracting their creation cost that is 159 805 from shows. They all at least at some point have been bred about twice at 1k each so that is another 51,200 they have earned me.

My best earner is only a 9.7. 140 of my mares have made more then create price and all but two have Pt's greater then 9.0. But I have 6.8's making more then 9.9's. My worst surrogate is an 8.3 and has lost 6 grand, but I have a 2.8 turning a small profit. The very worst horse in my barn is an 11.6.

My point is any horse can be a winner or a looser it all depends on how you manage them and if they get lucky. PT tell you how how big the cap is on the money a particular horse can make. It is basically gambling. A low PT horse plays in low stakes tournaments. He can only win a little but he only has a little going in to loose. The risks are low. High PT horses move up very fast and play very high stakes games. They can earn hundreds of thousands but they can burn through that much too. The higher the average PT in your barn the more you can make but the more you put at risk.

Take a look at your barn and figure out what you need. Do you need more steady dependable who will churn out a small consistent profit for the next several years to wade out the rise and fall of the big showers? Or do you need big high level showers to start upping the stakes and increasing how much you can win.

This seemed like a good way to explain the issue of Pt so I thought I would post a copy here.

Also I say be careful of what you cull. Because a low PT score doesn't mean the horse will be a bad breeder either. This guy whose PT score is dismal is producing horses with PT scores in the 10's & one 11 & he has only been bred 15 time. I like to test all my star stallions to see if they could be good breeders. He was bred to mares with realtively low PT's, but many were old blues. I will breed to stallions with high PT's, but I do so to bring up my overall average not to breed super PT's.

An update to this, my mares who remind you have never once been culled or hand entered and always been left on auto enter, have now made me 1,334,780 hb's profit from shows. Removing the creation cost they have made me over half a million dollars in pure profit, not counting the times they have stood for brood. That is with just over 250 mares. With 1000 broods I could easily have made 2 million in profit at this point. Just goes to show that with auto enter you really do not even have to try to make money.
